Abstract

The study of chromosome number and karyology of fishes has become more valuable to ichtyologists interested in taxonomy and evolution. Chromosomes or karyotyp < /strong>es of River Nile fishes have not been reported in the world. The p < /strong>resent pap < /strong>er is intended as the first of a series of karyological studies of River Nile fishes. In this study the karyotyp < /strong>es of one sp < /strong>ecies of family Clariidae: Clarias lazera. The diploid chromosame nunber was found to be 56. It consists of 42 two-arm chromosomes and 14 one-arm chro mosomes. The arm number is 98. No polymorphism in the dip < /strong>loid number nor any sexual dimorphism was noted. The karyotype comp < /strong>rises 10 pairs of metacentric, ll pairs of submetacentric and 7 pairs of sub-telocentric and acrocentric chromosomes.
