Abstract

Twenty two adult Saidi ewes of 4-6 years old were used in this experiment. According to the occurrence of shedding in April, 1980 ewes divided into two groups, shedder and non - shedder ewes. Detailed analysis, using fleece and blood samp < /strong>les from the shedder and the non-shedder ewes were done in an attemp < /strong>t to through some light on the biochemical changes related to fleece shedding. Results obtained could be summarized in the following: 1- The non-shedder ewes produced 243.09% clean wool as much as the corresponding
shedder ones. 2- Shedders had the higher averages of fibre diameter and high percentage of medulla
ted fibres, but differences were not statistically significant. 3- Average staple length was found to be 7.17 cm and 13.26 cm for shedder and non
shedder ewes, respectively. The difference was highly significant (P/ 0.01). 4- There is no significant difference between shedder and non-shedder ewes in the
concentration of RBCs. While hemoglobin content was significantly higher in non
shedder ewes than in sheeder ones. 5- Non-shedders had the higher value of serum glucose concentration than the shedders.
Also the highest values of the serum alkaline and acid phosp < strong>ha
tase enzymes acti
vities were recorded in the non-shedders group. 6- The levels of both S-GOT and S-GPT were found to be higher in the non-shedders
than in shedders.
